Signs of discrimination

Thursday 9 January 2003

The US Library of Congress houses the work created in the 1930s by Farm Security Administration photographers — Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans and others. On the library website is a collection of photographs of signs enforcing racial discrimination. From the web page intro:

Photographers working for the Farm Security Administration Historical Section (later transferred to the Office of War Information) were encouraged to document continuity and change in many aspects of life in America during the years the unit was in operation. They were particularly encouraged to photograph billboards and signs as one indicator of such developments. Although no documentation has been found to indicate that photographers were explicitly encouraged to photograph racial discrimination signs, the collection includes a significant number of this type of image, which is rarely found in other Prints and Photographs Division collections.

This reference aid includes all the known images of discrimination signs found in the Farm Security Administration-Office of War Information file of photographic prints. This list was compiled in response to frequent patron requests for such images. The list is updated as additional images are discovered.

I think that that is totally a sign of racial discrimination!! African Americans have the same rights as whites (caucasion) I think that it is totally a sign of antidisestablishmentarianism!! they should follow the rules and I think this picture tells a story!

I went to a 2007 Bikefest at a near West End Fairgrounds and one of the firehouse food both had posted a sign that said:

YES WE SPEAK ENGLISH sure enough me being latino from Puerto Rico born in the USA served my local firehouse as a Fire Police for a period of 4 years as volunteer. It did offend me but I did not do anything about it. I figured they have the freedom of expression and that freedom was give by many American Soldier including my father. I said to my daughther as I pointed out the sign. Ivette, don't let this discorauge you from reaching your goal, these are only obstacles that you are going to encounter during your growing period, feel sorry for them as they are missing in learning about other cultures making more ignorant to life. She smile and game me a hug.. and said Don't worry dad I can already handle people like that. MY GIRL
