Acme whistles

Wednesday 1 October 2003

Acme whistles have been made by J Hudson and Co (Whistles) Ltd of Birmingham since the 1880s. Their range of police whistles, thunderers, sirens, bosun’s whistles, orchestral whistles, silent dog whistles and marine whistles is displayed on their website.

I recently unearthed what looks to be a bosun's whistle in the aftermath of hurricane Juan in Halifax Nova Scotia. It appears to be made of brass and bears the inscription:J HUDSON Co. Birmingham 1939. It seems terribly little to go on but I thought to contact you to see if you might cast any light onto this whistle's history. I am contacting the Maritime Museum here, though I you may know more about this than they.
Thank-you.

Whilst taking up some old floor boards in our old cottage my husband has found a metropolitan whistle which we think is made of nickel. It has the patent number 5727-08 and is inscribed J Hudson & Co, Birmingham 1915. We think that a previous owner of the house may have worked on the railway. Can you give us any more information about it's history. Thankyou.

I have a three in one whistle made by Achme, thought to be a shepherds whistle. Has anybody got any information on this please?

David Kierans commented on 29 January 2006

Re;- the above whistles.... any with the Patent number on the capo at the top ..5727-08 were made from 1908 onwards for some years. The 1915 and 1916 whistles were made by Hudsons, but were also made by other companies and dated thereon....e.g. De Courcey of Frankfort St,also in Birmingham. All the dated ones are Military. The triple whistle was made in several different styles, but basically they are shepherds whistles......with the letters G.D. and C...........for GO....DOWN....and COME. If anyone in contact with your site has any dated whistles prior to 1900 and ANY Police named ones then please do contact me via e/m. I am a genuine collector NOT A DEALER ! I hope this info. helps those requesting.Best regards,David.

I found a whistle in my grandmothers jewlery box. It has the patent number 5727-08 on the top and the other markings on the side say THE CITY WHISTLE in a circle with the word PATENT in the middle. Is it also a Hudson or different? Thanks for any information pertaining to it.

Sarah Manning commented on 25 February 2006

I have my grandfather's police whistle complete with chain. The patent number is 5727-08 and on the side it reads 'The Acme Referee'. I can't seem to find any information about it. It is definitely a police whistle but I don't understand why it has the word referee written on it. Can you enlighten me? Thank you

David Kierans commented on 28 February 2006

Whistles marked on the cap 5727-08 were made in and after 1908(in that format) The City is yet another trade name of Hudsons ....AND....other whistle makers too....deCourcey for instance. The referee is what it says it is....a refs whistle!........ David.

I am no antique collector, but whilst clearing out an old back room in a scout hut, i stumbled upon a whistle. It was dirty and weathered, but i needed a whistle for a scout camp the next week! Whilst packing my pack, i cleaned the whistle and found it was '' The Metropolitan Patent, J Hudson and co. 131 Barr SI, Birmingham'' whistle. I have no idea what this means, but if anyone does then please tell me! Am i right in thinking its a Police whistle from the first half of the century?

I found what looks like an old police whistle that's been in our family for at least 60 years.
It has A.R.P. stamped on it in large letters and J. Hudson & Co, Barr St, Hockley, Birmingham, stamped underneath.
Does anyone have an idea what the A.R.P. stands for or how old the whistle might be?

David commented on 26 November 2007

By searching ebay under whistles, I've answered my own question above! There are a number of J Hudson whistles for sale with A.R.P. stamped on them and it stands for Air Raid Patrol. This also determins that it was issued to my dad during WWII. So now I know it's history.

Elizabeth (Betty) Leary commented on 6 February 2008

Sorry David, but I beg to differ; ARP as we knew it in Manchester England during the war, meant Air Raid Precaution and an Air Raid Warden was a person who patrolled the streets, checking everyone's blackout precautions were correct and no lights were showing. Also of course they were a great deal of help and assistance during the air raids. I myself have one of J.Hudson's whistles dated 1914, (correctly enscribed) which was my Grandfather's who served in France. I don't know for sure; but presume this to be one of a mass production; specifically made for the Second World War, does anyone know that for sure. Also does anyone have any history of the J.Hudson Family (I presume it was a family business at that time), as I would like to have such a history to keep with the whistle, along with other family heirlooms. eleary5@sympatico.ca

Hudson police type whisltle: apart from the manufacturers name & the Barr St. address ( minus any numerals ) the inscription reads " THE Metropolitan " it's three & a quarter inches long & appears to be made of plated brass / bronze, the said plating shows a great deal of patination & wear ; how old could it be.
