Discussion of the ingredients of cutler’s resin continued on the oldtools list today. Steven Longley has turned up an American supplier of pine resin, also called brewer’s pitch. You can buy it from Jas Townsend & Son, Inc.

FWIW, the Apache also made jugs woven from plant fiber (a “tuss”) to carry water, and coated them heavily with pine tar resin to waterproof them. Some still work effectively 100+ years later.

If you live in a rural area, check with your local farm supply store (aka feed store). Mine sells pine tar in small (8 oz) cans. It is handy for dressing wounds, applying to horn stubs after dehorning and lots of other uses.

For styrene (fiberglass resin) I use that peroxide stuff....what is used for pine??

In 1971-754 I worked for a restaurant in Spokane, Wa where we cooked ribs over apple wood and served potatoes cooked in pine resin. We got the pitch in 55 gal drums.
Huge affair. Had 2 large caudrums big enough to put, as I recall, 40 large potatoes in each pot, they would sink to bottom and 45 minutes later would float to the top. We then used tongs to pull spud out and put in on a square of aluminum foil and wrap to go to kitchen. The restaurant , Kissin' Cousin, Started in Post Falls, Idaho, by a man named Carlton Ivey. He was probably in his 70's when I met him. Cool old guy. Told me the Resin potatoes came from the loggers in Georgia where he grew up. The wives would put a fresh resin potatoe in the lunch box and it would be warm still at lunchtime.
I think the place in spokane used this system for 5 or six years. It was fairly high maintanance and you got burned dropping potato in and pulling it out, inevitable and chipping out burnt resin was a chore.
We served some fine meals, slow cooked ribs, and the finest baked potato you would ever eat.

I remember back in the late 60's my Dad brought home a cast iron kettle filled with what he called "rosin". He placed it on top of one of the heating elements on the stove. My Mom wrapped potatoes in aluminum foil and gently lowered them into the molten rosin. When they were done cooking they would float to the surface where she would take them out with tongs and let them rest to cool. We had fun breaking open the hard shell that had formed when they cooled. The rosin imparted a unique and appealing flavor which I'll never forget.
I am looking for a supplier (to Austrlia) for raw pine resin or rosin (grade FF). Any clues or suggestions as to where to source the above would be greatly appreciated
