Hashish and ganja shop, Kathmandu

The shop was one storey above the street. It was a good sized room, with windows looking over a public square. The framed government licence hung on the wall above a striped Nepali cloth. On a low table a scale, glass jars of dope, chillums, pipes and cigarette papers were laid out.

The atmosphere was comfortable, like a friendly wine shop whose host offers samples and expert advice. Travellers sat on the carpet absorbed in Ron Cobb cartoons or the scene outside. Sometimes they got jolts of delight from an LP playing on the hi-fi.
