Globe theatre galleries

2 of 6

The project's aim was:
... to devise a reconstruction of the First Globe Theatre modified only where strictly necessary to meet current building legislation, so that the theatre can be used for performances.

(Jon Greenfield and Peter McCurdy, from the appendix to The design of the Globe, 1995).

It is an experiment in Shakespearian theatre, with a cast of historians, architects, archaeologists, carpenters, and actors (plus publicists, fund raisers and a full house of other interested people).

The reconstruction of these galleries was partly conjecture. The experts looked at building contracts for other London theatres of the time, at the record of archaeological remains, and at Elizabethan buildings that still stand. Architects, carpenters, historians and other scholars argued the issues back and forth. In the end this was, perhaps, the best guess.
