Corfu

The four of us met by chance in Thessalonica, all travel-weary and wanting a quiet place to stop for a month. I suggested we go to Corfu and rent a strawberry pink villa.*

The place we found was a two room cottage on a rocky shore beside a deep blue sea with the mountains of Albania on the horizon. This photo caught a hen that flew in and perched on the bed, a wintry tree outside, the owner's ancestors, my notebook, pen and glass of ouzo. In my notebook I drew a sketch to remind me of the place.

*In My family and other animals, Gerald Durrell fondly described his childhood on Corfu in the 1930s. He lived with his family in a series of villas, one of which was strawberry pink.
