Kabul, Afghanistan

From Pakistan I travelled through the Khyber Pass and came into Afghanistan, a country totally exotic and foreign to me.

In Kabul the Moghul emperors' fortress stood in the medieval core of the city. Around the bazaars camels and donkeys were as common as trucks and cars. King Zahir Shah was on the throne, soliciting aid from both sides in the cold war.

Beyond the old centre were modern roads and suburbs, laid out with guidance from Soviet technocrats. I stayed for a week, then travelled by bus on Russian and American built roads to Kandahar and Herat.
