Chris Jordan’s Running the numbers: an American self-portrait is a series of photographs that looks at contemporary American culture through the austere lens of statistics. Here are images that give scale to the numbers.

A small detail from Prison Uniforms, 2007 which depicts 2.3 million prison uniforms … equal to the number of Americans in prison in 2005. Of all the countries in the world, the US has both the largest prison population, and the largest percentage of its population in jail.
