Engineering heritage conference in Dunedin

I have just spent a couple of weeks in New Zealand, at the 3rd Australasian Engineering Heritage Conference and visiting various sites in Otago. I presented a paper on Queensland’s timber and iron lighthouses: 19th century colonial innovation [pdf, 165KB].

An image from my conference presentation. On the left is the Lady Elliot Island lighthouse tower (first lit 1873, 18 m high), in the middle is the Flat Top Island tower (first lit 1879, 6 m high) — these represent the usual range of sizes of the iron plated, timber framed colonial Queensland lighthouse towers. On the right is the tower of North Reef lighthouse (first lit 1878, 24 m high), the largest by far.
