Encyclopaedia Britannica

Wednesday 3 April 2002

I have the ninth edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica (1875). And I also have the eleventh edition (1911, with 1922 supplement), which I prefer for its greater coverage, its thin paper and its leather binding. I don’t begrudge the four-and-a-half metres of shelving they occupy. It’s handy to be able to look up Primitive Methodist, or Poughkeepsie, or Piranesi in these time capsules.

'Encyclopaedia Britannica', eleventh edition

You can get the same information — though not the pleasure of paper and binding — from a website. The unnamed authors of this site have scanned and OCRed the huge 1911 text. The presentation is rough, the navigation is basic, but the words are there. I hope that one day all this text can find its way into a hypertext database, like the modern Britannica.

Some suggestions for those looking for values, missing volumes, etc.

1. eBay - you can search on completed items if you register (variable prices, from low wholesale to retail, depending on timing and luck)
2. abebooks.com (high retail prices - you can't sell them for this, but it's something)
3. used.addall.com (ditto)

You'll have to be a bit clever with the search engine. For example, try the searches with ninth or 9th.

As you can imagine, people are looking for complete sets. Those in good condition will be worth the most. Those in poor condition aren't worth much, nor are sets missing the plates (illustrations).

Colin Wilson commented on 2 March 2007

For guidance some about 1999 at auction I bought a complete set of the 9th and 10th editions together for about $110 (New Zealand currency)

The contents were complete but the condition is not good. Most of the covers have come off and there is black mould on many many pages.

At the same time a 2nd hand book seller was selling 9th and 10 editions togther for $6-700 (New Zealand currency) but the volumes were in much better condition.

The 11th edition together with the 3 volumes of the 12th edition cost about $400 in 2004.

Most people refer to the thin rice paper of the 11th edition but in North America the 11th edition was sold printed on much thicker paper - so they take up a lot more shelf space.

I saw a set of this version in a bookshop in Port Townsend Washington State in 2005. From Memory the price was around $700 (US currency). I am not sure if this set had any supplements.

For info:

The 10th edition (of 1902) was just a supplement to the 9th edition to update that edition. What seems to have happened was that in 1902 The Times (in London) reprinted in its entirety and unchanged the 9th Edition and tacked on a dozen volumes (variously called "The New Volumes" or the 10th Edition) to bring the work up to date.

They must have had the stereos from the initial printing stacked in a shed out the back somewhere!

And the 9th edition certainly needed bringing up to date as some of the earlier volumes were up to 25 years old at that time.

The 11th edition (of 1911) was followed in 1922 by 3 more volumes called the 12th edition. This covered in detail the tumultuous war years but other entries were of the "Bloggs Joe: died 29 May 1915" format. If you wanted a fuller report you had to go back to the 11th edition.

I understand that the 13th edition was a supplement to the supplement, but I haven't seen it so don't really know.

I wouldn't think that odd volumes would have any real value.

I have a reprint of the 1st edition, the 9th+10th 11+12th the 14th from around 1930 and again from 1965 and finally the 15th edition from 1990 all scattered about the house!

I have no idea what happened yesterday but I am very well informed on the events of 1492!

David commented on 6 December 2007

I haven't read every posting but just in case it hasn't been pointed out yet: the American printings of the 9th (with or without 10th) editions were (with one exception mentioned below) pirated and as a result articles are missing that are included in the Black edition published in Scotland (and subsequently in the London reprint). The only authorized American printing was the Scribner set. Also, I have found that the 11th edition in good condition with the onionskin paper is closer to $1200-1500. Finally, as most realize, the articles or notices in the the 11th are frequently edited versions of the longer notices from the 9th (or the 7th, in some cases) editions and I personally prefer to read the original notices. The authors generally had quite marked personal writing styles, strong views about their subjects, and were generally quite prominent (many still so); I don't know why anyone would prefer to read a version in the 11th or later editions that was edited by a staffer to reading the original. Finally, at this point the interest of either edition is primarily historical and the particular virtues of the 11th (topicality, shorter notices on more subjects of contemporary interest, having the entire set published at the same time, etc.) have long passed.

I live in Florida (USA), and own a complete 24 book set of the 1960 Encyclopedia Britannica (the revised 14th edition). They are in almost perfect shape.

This volume of the Encyclopedia Britannica contains: an Index to volumes 1 to 23; an Atlas of the World; an Index to the Atlas of the World. The encyclopedias contain both black and white and color diagrams, photos and maps.

This edition was the first to be kept up to date by continual (usually annual) revision. This is the last edition that was published in one part. The 15th edition (introduced as "Britannica 3") was published in three parts: a 10-volume Micropædia (which contained short articles and served as an index), a 19-volume Macropædia, plus the Propædia.

It is crimson with gold writing on covers. The cover says "1768" (the year the company was established).

Photos available upon request. Please email me at britannica@mudman.us if you have an idea of the value, or would like to make an offer.

Hi I have rencently found a Louis Vuitton trunk which inside states tht it was made specifically for encyclopedia britannica. Having read some of the comments above I see that there were only 200 made. Although I don't have the encyclopedias would you be able to tell the price for just the trunk (and with encyclopedias for interest sake)

I am going to throw out my Britannica set, 1957. Have no idea what edition that is and can't find anywhere on the title page that gives that information. Maroon cover with gold lettering. I used to love it but haven't cracked a single volume in at least a decade, so it's time to clear the shelves.
Before I toss it in the trash, does anyone know if the set has value to any institution or person? I'll happily give it away rather than clog the landfill, as long as someone else pays shipping.

OMFG! The Ninth edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica was printed in Edinburgh Scotland by Adam and Charles Black. Volume 1 in 1875 through to volume 24 in 1889. Anything else is a reprint and aside from it's inherent use as a great family heirloom and reference text, you should probably wipe your ass with it. I would furthermore like to point out that this is not the complete set, by 1897 the Britannica was falling behind in it's quest to be current, but having just completed the ninth in 1889 could not bring a completely new edition therefore in 1901 they released the first volume of the ‘new volumes’ volume XXV in 1901 through XXXV in 1903..... and I quote ‘ constituting in combination with the existing volumes of the ninth edition THE TENTH EDITION , these were printed in New York by the Encyclopaedia Britannica Company not Adam and Charles Black as an American named Hooper had by now bought the rights to the name ....long story short .... pre 1889 and leather bound it's worth some cheddar to someone.

Dear Users,

Looks like we have the same fundamental problem. We would like to know value of rare, antique EB first editions from different very important for us personal reasons and we do not know where to find it. I searched for this information long time in the internet and many times. I already contacted with many places without any result. I am very surprised, that according to very big interest in EB, what confirm even only this web page, it is impossible to find it. I think that for this situation are responsible actioners and auction houses who wants to keep this basic information for themselves because they make own huge proffit from luck of knowledge the owners EB. During my search I found this web page but until today I did not receive answer for my basic questions. I think that given valuation in this web page is much lower than real value EB. Please remember that in value EB are involve very important factors, which increase EB value. Like age of book (in each year EB was produced how many centuries ago), how this book was produced acording to available techniques (this is very interesting to modern history and has museum value). To these factors we have to add historical and social world situation few centuries ago when these books EB were produced and describe it themselves. Additional to it very important are factors that in produced few centuries ago volumes is involve own EB edition history (divaded in fist, second, fird main parts of produced editions) Also is very importand for the estimated value of EB how many original copies left after two world wars and also in which condition these original copies are. Also very important that the less original copies left, are more rare and more valuable. Additional to these all factors very important is knowledge in these EB according to current century. Somebody advised me to contact with auction houses and pay for valuation for each item.
If do You know professional value EB 9 and 10 edition even incomplete please inform me about it.

I have a complete set of the 9th and 10th Edition of the Enclocyclopaedia Britannica which is unusual as most sets lose the map atlas and index which are included here. Volumes 1 to 24 are from the 9th edition originally printed in the 1880's and includes the updated with the 10th edition, volumes 25 to 35 printed in 1902 including volume 34 Maps and volume 35 index.

The covers on these are worn on the corners and the spines on half a dozen are ripped. The inside is in good condition especially the plates which are still clear and bright after 100 years.
