Encyclopaedia Britannica

Wednesday 3 April 2002

I have the ninth edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica (1875). And I also have the eleventh edition (1911, with 1922 supplement), which I prefer for its greater coverage, its thin paper and its leather binding. I don’t begrudge the four-and-a-half metres of shelving they occupy. It’s handy to be able to look up Primitive Methodist, or Poughkeepsie, or Piranesi in these time capsules.

'Encyclopaedia Britannica', eleventh edition

You can get the same information — though not the pleasure of paper and binding — from a website. The unnamed authors of this site have scanned and OCRed the huge 1911 text. The presentation is rough, the navigation is basic, but the words are there. I hope that one day all this text can find its way into a hypertext database, like the modern Britannica.

flux commented on 5 October 2005

Some suggestions for those looking for values, missing volumes, etc.

1. eBay - you can search on completed items if you register (variable prices, from low wholesale to retail, depending on timing and luck)
2. abebooks.com (high retail prices - you can't sell them for this, but it's something)
3. used.addall.com (ditto)

You'll have to be a bit clever with the search engine. For example, try the searches with ninth or 9th.

As you can imagine, people are looking for complete sets. Those in good condition will be worth the most. Those in poor condition aren't worth much, nor are sets missing the plates (illustrations).

Colin Wilson commented on 2 March 2007

For guidance some about 1999 at auction I bought a complete set of the 9th and 10th editions together for about $110 (New Zealand currency)

The contents were complete but the condition is not good. Most of the covers have come off and there is black mould on many many pages.

At the same time a 2nd hand book seller was selling 9th and 10 editions togther for $6-700 (New Zealand currency) but the volumes were in much better condition.

The 11th edition together with the 3 volumes of the 12th edition cost about $400 in 2004.

Most people refer to the thin rice paper of the 11th edition but in North America the 11th edition was sold printed on much thicker paper - so they take up a lot more shelf space.

I saw a set of this version in a bookshop in Port Townsend Washington State in 2005. From Memory the price was around $700 (US currency). I am not sure if this set had any supplements.

For info:

The 10th edition (of 1902) was just a supplement to the 9th edition to update that edition. What seems to have happened was that in 1902 The Times (in London) reprinted in its entirety and unchanged the 9th Edition and tacked on a dozen volumes (variously called "The New Volumes" or the 10th Edition) to bring the work up to date.

They must have had the stereos from the initial printing stacked in a shed out the back somewhere!

And the 9th edition certainly needed bringing up to date as some of the earlier volumes were up to 25 years old at that time.

The 11th edition (of 1911) was followed in 1922 by 3 more volumes called the 12th edition. This covered in detail the tumultuous war years but other entries were of the "Bloggs Joe: died 29 May 1915" format. If you wanted a fuller report you had to go back to the 11th edition.

I understand that the 13th edition was a supplement to the supplement, but I haven't seen it so don't really know.

I wouldn't think that odd volumes would have any real value.

I have a reprint of the 1st edition, the 9th+10th 11+12th the 14th from around 1930 and again from 1965 and finally the 15th edition from 1990 all scattered about the house!

I have no idea what happened yesterday but I am very well informed on the events of 1492!

David commented on 6 December 2007

I haven't read every posting but just in case it hasn't been pointed out yet: the American printings of the 9th (with or without 10th) editions were (with one exception mentioned below) pirated and as a result articles are missing that are included in the Black edition published in Scotland (and subsequently in the London reprint). The only authorized American printing was the Scribner set. Also, I have found that the 11th edition in good condition with the onionskin paper is closer to $1200-1500. Finally, as most realize, the articles or notices in the the 11th are frequently edited versions of the longer notices from the 9th (or the 7th, in some cases) editions and I personally prefer to read the original notices. The authors generally had quite marked personal writing styles, strong views about their subjects, and were generally quite prominent (many still so); I don't know why anyone would prefer to read a version in the 11th or later editions that was edited by a staffer to reading the original. Finally, at this point the interest of either edition is primarily historical and the particular virtues of the 11th (topicality, shorter notices on more subjects of contemporary interest, having the entire set published at the same time, etc.) have long passed.

Does anyone know if the cabinet I have with my 10th edition set is the original cabinet or any advice as to how I can tell. It is approximately 4' high, 12" deep and 16" wide. There are twenty nine slotted shelves with a curved indention in each for easier access to each volume. Thanks for any advice.
