Collecting Airstream caravans

Tuesday 23 December 2003

In this month’s special places piece about the Farnsworth house I mentioned Lord Palumbo, owner of the house from 1968 until a few days ago. A little googling today turned up another mention of him.

Lord Palumbo, the British connoisseur known as a collector of world architecture, harbors two Airstreams in Plano, Ill., at the aesthetically serene Farnsworth House, the 1950 Modernist landmark in steel and glass designed by Mies van der Rohe and later bought by Lord Palumbo. For now, the Airstreams are sitting idle on the estate, one near the visitor’s gate and the other near a garage.

After 7 years of ownership I have recently discovered that I have a rare 1959 World Traveler. I need some input on what to do with it now.

I'm not sure what this website is but I googled airstream world traveler and found it. I am interested in buying your Airstream. Please email me or post again and I will look at this website again. thanks,

Betsy: I guess your comment was addressed to Joe (who commented in February 2004). I just tried to send him an email message about your comment, but his email address is no longer current. Sorry.

betsy commented on 21 November 2004

Peter-
who are you? thanks for trying Joe- do you know him? I'm not sure that you are interested in Airstreams as your quote you posted seems to be about Lord Palumbo- who I am not familar with. but judging from the links on the side of this page (of which I only initially looked at one or two) I see you like design and architecture. you might want to look into Airstreams more- they represent greater ideals and Americana than you might think at first. Anyway, I'll look back here again. If you're interested I know quite a bit about them.

Peter Marquis-Kyle commented on 21 November 2004

Betty: No, I don't know Joe. As to who I am, see 'autobio' on this site.

Good day,

My name is Pete Daniel, I am a member of the Wally Byam Caravan Club International (WBCCI) or commonly called the "Airstream" club in the US. We are planning on doing a caravan in your country around DEC -Jan 2009. We are planning on shipping over about 25 vintage units ranging in age from early 60's to 2009's. We plan on touring your country for about 4-5 weeks and then selling them there and not bring them back to the US. I know its a little far off, but wondering if there are any Airstreams in AU that you have ever seen.?

We are looking toi rent tow vehciles for the period also. If anyone has any ideas about how to sell or pre-sell them before we get there, i would appreciate it very much!

I can be reached via Email - pete@consultadc.com

Hi Peter

Your caravans are wonderful and I think you are marvellous spending time to collect Air stream caravans. I am a caravanner myself and my father recently passed away. He has a vintage Bessacarr and I don't want to scrap it. We have searched all over the internet asking people if they would like to do it up. No one had responded and we are at a point now where we may have to scrap it. But looking at your blog maybe someone or even you might want to take it away for keeps and do it up. We don't want to see bessy in a scrap yard. What do you think?

Peter Marquis-Kyle commented on 4 August 2009

Hi Gill

Thanks for leaving a comment here on my website. I should explain that I don't collect Airstream caravans — I am happy to leave that to Lord Polumbo and other people with the wherewithal.

As to your Bessy, it would be helpful if you mentioned where it is. I guess in the UK — is that right?

Mike commented on 19 August 2009

Hi Robyne Chamberlain, I am Vic in Perth. I am an Aussie/American since 1970, now getting over a stroke. I am very interested to know more about you importing Airstreams into AU and NZ next year. A retired cousin of mine in Texas is also interested. I have done some business between the two countries in the past, but not in this field or product line. I am very interested in knowing more of what you are going to do and wonder if I can help at all in the West. My wife and I go back and forth between the two counties often as we have kids and grand kids in both. My mobile # is 0404 005 220 I can give you my email ad if you wish to call me to discuss further.
Cheers,
Vic

What an interesting conversation to happen in on! My wife (Kiwi) and I are living in our home at the coast in the Northwest USA, and will be moving to New Zealand when our home here sells (http://beachhomeforsale.blogspot.com), and, among other things hope to ship our 35 foot 1953 SPARTAN to Auckland. We will also be shipping our 1965 Chevrolet motorhome. We are thinking of using the SPARTAN as an art studio (lovely honey birch panelling). I am also interested in the possibility of finding and shipping vintage caravans to New Zealand for resale. Airstreams are way cool, but DO look into other aluminum caravans that look SHARP when polished. I have seen vintage American caravans in Australia on some of the hot rod websites. Does anyone know if there is a club or association of New Zealand vintage caravan or motorhome collectors or appreciators?

And finally, thank you Peter Marquis-Kyle for hosting this discussion of Airstream collecting!

michael leake commented on 24 January 2010

I am curious if the caravan of 25 vintage airstreams is touring australia now and if the intention of selling in australia still exists.
Wr are on the south cost from melbourne and are interested to by a vitage airsteam. Have collection of indians to complement,1939 four cylinder, 1940 outfit chief, 1946 chief.....
Please could any one keep me in the loop?
thanks

We run a location company in Sydney and are often being asked to if we can source an Airstream to use a as a back drop for various photo shoots. Does anyone know of one in the greater Sydney area? All our clients pay good location fees and take care of our locations.
We are also always looking for any other quirky or unusual locations, houses too.

Hi all,

I've just purchased and am importing an Airstream from the USA to Australia. It is actually a lot cheaper and easier than you might think.

I've just started a blog which aims to help others who want to do the same thing. It will have details on finding, shipping and renovating an Airstream.

I've just posted an entry outlining what it cost us to buy and import it.

Check out the blog.

Matt.

Hi Matt
Love your blog, it's really helpful, I'm just starting out a search for an airstream for a potential new business and I'll be looking for an airstream soon so thanks! If anyone has an airstream for sale please email me lisakanani@hotmail.com
Thanks, Lisa

Steve Bridges commented on 15 August 2011

Hi All,
I've got a 1972 Silver Streak Continental Rocket (cool name huh?)for sale in Melbourne.

It's 30' long from towball to rear bumper, and has everything including shower, bath, toilet vanity unit, under floor ducted heating, 4 burner stove, oven, microwave, full size fridge, reverse cycle roof mounted airconditioning, TV antennae, etc., etc, etc, ....it even has a door bell! MASSIVE amount of internal storage. This is a genuinely fully self-contained vintage luxury travel trailer.

Silver Streaks are aircraft style full dual skin aluminium construction, and this one only weights in at 2480kg

If you are a serious buyer, I'm a serious seller. I'm asking $25,000 as is, so it's affordable. If you are willing to wait, I'll happy to complete to Australian electrical & gas certification requirements, but the asking price will obviously increase accordingly.

Cheers,
Steve
