John Smeaton

Monday 30 April 2007

Another month, another placeholder. I’m still busy inspecting lighthouses, and collecting useful knowledge about them.

John Smeaton: from an original picture ascribed to Mortimer in the possession of the Royal Society: under the Superintendence of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, undated engraving by R Woodman. The noted British engineer John Smeaton designed the third Eddystone Lighthouse (1755-59), prototype of the classic wave-swept lighthouse tower, featured in the background of this portrait.
